We met on a Harry Potter social networking site by the name of myHogwarts (now HogwartsIsHere). Whilst Johan had been a regular in the chat section, sharing his music with fellow Potter fans, I had spent little time getting to know the others, instead enjoying other aspects of the site. It was in October 2012 we happened to come across each other by chance, and started talking about our shared interests.
When I went on the site the next day, he was still there and up way past his bedtime. We ended up on the same Facebook group, and a couple of days later I had a friend request. Normally, I wouldn’t accept random friend requests from people I’d only talked to once or twice, but on a whim, I accepted. Our first private chat lasted some 6 hours, and let’s just say we hit it off rather quickly.
How Our Story Began
We shared many common interests and traits, and he was really easy to talk to. After a week of many long conversations and a tidbit of flirting, we both admitted to liking each other. This could easily have become awkward, because neither of us knew what to do next. I wanted to wait and see what happened, for it had only been a week and I didn’t want to get my hopes up too much. I need not have worried. After a short silence, the flow of conversation came back in full swing, perhaps with a bit more flare!
It didn’t take long for me to buy a webcam. We began talking and video calling on Skype, and had a load of fun getting to know one another. We began asking truth questions, which would then lead to him asking me to be his girlfriend on the 8th of November 2012. I had never had a boyfriend. Despite the 9-hour difference in timezones, we had talked for many hours every day since he added me. I couldn’t ask for anything more in a guy. How could I say no? I liked him more than a little. I liked him a lot.
In the months that followed, we would come to learn the hardship and the heartache of having one’s significant other living 9485 miles across the other side of the world – from Australia to Sweden. But we have never doubted our love for a moment. With each day and every Skype call, our love grows. The iPad I recieved for my 21st birthday has meant falling asleep beside each other almost every night. Of course, it’s not nearly the same as having that loved one cuddle their arms around you.
Together, we were intertwined for the first time on 8 December 2013, 13 months since we started dating. I boarded an Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger airliner, ready to begin my first overseas adventure by myself. It was the result of months of planning, determination and longing to meet my boyfriend. I stayed with him and his family for a total of 6 weeks and had the best time of my life. It was so magical and felt so right. It reaffirmed the fact that we worked well as a close distance couple too, and this was what we wanted.
Meeting for the First Time
After returning home (quite devastated from having to say our goodbyes), we doubled our job-search efforts. I finally found work and Johan started studying. We were – are – going to make this relationship work. I have had in my mind since we started dating that we’d be close distance within 5 years. We hope to stick to that. The distance between us means a minimum of $2000 spent mostly in airfares alone to visit each other, which means these meets are few and far between. Instead, most of our savings are going towards eventually closing the distance and moving not only countries, but continents. We had an even more amazing second meeting in December 2015 for 4 weeks, 2 years since we last saw each other. You can read all about it under the Holidays category. Our goal is to close the distance by a third meet in 2017.
